Wilder
was incorporated on March 15, 1935, populated mostly by
employees of the Andrews Steel Company (now known as Newport
Steel Corporation). A railroad station where the L&N
crossed the Licking River was called the Wilder Station , named
after a famous ophthalmologist, William Hamlin Wilder
(1860-1931). When the city was incorporated, the founding
fathers assumed the station's name for the city.
Earlier
heritage indicates that Civil War battery fortifications were
strategically located in Wilder's present limits. The Holt
Battery, directly north of St. John's Catholic Church, honors
the memory of Brigadier General J. Holt. The Wiggins
Battery, on a hill west of Licking Pike and just south of the
Three Mile Creek, honors the memory of Samuel Wiggins, builder
of Cincinnati's Wiggins Block on Fountain Square.
The
City of Wilder has a population of 2624 (based on 2000 census).
As the crow flies, the distance to Washington, DC is 423 miles,
and the distance to the Kentucky capital, Frankfort, is 62
miles. Wilder encompasses much of the prime industrial
land in Campbell County and is within minutes of the Greater
Cincinnati International Airport and Interstates 75, 275 and
471.
Wilder
is in the Campbell
County School District (859-635-2173) with bus
transportation provided to all public and parochial schools
within the district. There are also major universities and
colleges nearby such as Northern
Kentucky University (within one mile from city limits),
University of Cincinnati, Xavier University, and Thomas
More College.
There
is a wide variety of activities in and around Wilder.
Within Wilder, there is the Town & Country Sports Complex
and Great Escape movie theater. You will also find a
number of restaurants in and around Wilder. You will have
no problems finding places to shop in the area; Wilder is
surrounded by several malls and shopping areas. Also
located nearby are numerous museums in Northern Kentucky and
Cincinnati, including the remarkable Union Terminal. New

door to the Newport Aquarium and the IMAX Theater. Wilder
is also just minutes from historic Coney Island.
